We have many Partner Organisations within the LGBT+ Partnership, so it's only right they get to explain what they do on a day to day basis, as well as looking ahead to the future.
This month, we have The Sober Parrot, part of The Nelson Trust, where we are often known to hold our 'Chatty Parrot' socials, and has been open just shy of a year.
Izzy, who manages The Sober Parrot, has spoken to us about what they're doing! Oh, and she has an offer for you later!
Q: Whereabouts is The Sober Parrot based and what are the overall ambitions of this venue?
IZZY: The Sober Parrot is located at 7 St. James Square, Cheltenham, just a short walk from The Brewery in the Town Centre. The Sober Parrot works to provide an accessible place to gain work experience and training whilst being a safe welcoming social space for all.
The Sober parrot is non-for profit and run by ‘The Nelson Trust’ charity who work with individuals, families and the local community to reduce the impact of addiction.
Any profit made is put straight back into the community to work with individuals overcoming addictions, trauma and disadvantage.
Q: In recent times, how do you feel you've supported the local LGBT+ community?
IZZY: The LGBT+ community has been identified as one which is potentially vulnerable to addiction and issues with drugs and alcohol.
We provide a safe, sober environment which allows the community to be sociable and feel comfortable in. This is also a space is for those who are younger including those under 18 that may not have a venue where they can feel comfortable without the social pressure to drink alcohol.
We run monthly Socials specifically for those who identity as LGBT+ where everyone is invited for a cuppa and a natter. Here they can meet other people from the community to talk through issues they may be facing and make a new friend.
Recently we have had a quiz themed around Ru Paul hosted by a local drag queen Misty Monique. It was a great night full of laughs. On the 5th of July the Partnership are hosting a LGBT+ Open Mic Night which we look forward to hosting.
Q: Are there other minority groups that you also support in the local area?
IZZY: As an alcohol free venue we also look to support those from all backgrounds including those who don’t drink for religious reasons.
We work heavily alongside Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees and will be hosting events at the venue throughout Refugee Week.
Our primary focus, the recovery community is also a minority group who we work with closely to provide work experience and also offer support groups as part of our wider charity The Nelson Trust.
Q: What are the future initiatives and plans you have for supporting the LGBT+ community?
IZZY: We host regular events which are open to all including the LGBT+ Community and look to create more events with the local LGBT society in the future.
We hope that the upcoming Open Mic night is the first of many, and with this year’s Cheltenham Pride In The Park being a huge success, we hope to become involved for the 2020 event.
Q: Where can people find more information about The Sober Parrot and even come and visit?
IZZY: We endeavour to keep our Facebook page up to date with all the latest events and news. Please check out our website www.thesoberparrot.com or visit us @thesoberparrot on Facebook and Instagram.
